Total Organic Carbon (TOC)
Total organic carbon (TOC) is a measure of the amount of carbon from organic material present in samples. A sample is typically but not limited to aqueous solutions or pure water. Measurement of solids or even gases is also possible with this technique.
Since TOC is a widely used technique in the measurement of liquids, this technique has resulted in representing an index of water quality, used in your processes.
TOC is a fast, exact and matrix-independent technique that gives a result of all carbon components present in the sample. Identification of individual organic compounds is not possible with this technique.
Why measure TOC on your samples?
- Water quality is very important for the final quality of your finished products.
- Repeated measurements of water samples from your process water gives insight in the quality of the water supply system itself.
- TOC is an interesting and cost effective technique used in cleaning validations with a faster response and lower limit of detection than other techniques used.

Think about highly hygroscopic substances and/or the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products. In these cases water or humidity is not desirable.
Moreover water or humidity control is most important. There are several ways to determine water content in your products possible examples are but not limited to Loss on Drying and Karl Fischer. Synergy Health Utrecht expanded their water content determination service offerings with Coulometric Karl Fischer.
Depending on the type of product and water content Synergy Health Utrecht can offer you the following techniques:
- Loss on Drying (atmospheric and under Vacuum)
- Ph. Eur. 2.2.32. method a, b, c, d, e
- USP <731>
- semi-micro determination by Karl Fischer
- Ph. Eur. 2.2.12.
- USP <921> method Ia
- micro determination by Coulometric Karl Fischer
- Ph. Eur. 2.5.32.
- USP <921> method Ic
